When InBev bought AB, they gutted the entire St. Louis based marketing organization and moved it all to NYC. This was the same marketing department responsible for such memorable ad campaigns as Spuds McKenzie, Whassup? and Bud Bowl.
This is what happens when you place the marketing of products aimed at Joe SixPack and Middle America into the ands of "coastal elites."

The stock price isn't indicative of very much either way. Bud Light is one of dozens of A-B brands, and the US is just one market in a global company.
We'll find out what the actual sales impact is from audited figures in the quarterly reports and the annual report. Till then, all sides will claim a resounding victory.
My question is: If the Mulvaney campaign was a success and the company's internal sales figures show it, why was the exec responsible for it put on leave?

R19, that specific comparison to Goya isn't very apt. First, it was the Goya CEO supporting Trump that caused the boycott. Trump was not hired in any way to be a spokesperson or "face" of Goya foods. And Goya is a family-owned company that doesn't have any responsibility to any shareholders, so they have the option of taking a stand that might lose them money. And because they don't have to file public reports, we have no way of knowing what the actual impact on the bottom line was.
The typical Goya customer is a Hispanic woman cooking traditional Mexican or Latin American foods for her family. That's someone who probably doesn't passionately hate Trump (he had a surprisingly high level of support among Latinos). Even if she does, she probably isn't glued to social media getting bombarded with calls to boycott.
So the CEO personally supporting Trump is unlikely to enrage most of Goya's main customers to the point of boycotting. Sure, no doubt everyone on DL and Reddit boycotted, but again, those customers aren't generally the bread and butter of Goya.
And who is the typical Bud Light customer? A blue-collar guy kicking back after work, or while watching the game. Someone who is very, very unlikely to identify with Dylan Mulvaney. The exec who made this decision was proud that she was turning her back on the "fratty," "out of touch" customers. She did it on purpose to enrage them.
Result: Those blue-collar customers were, as intended, enraged. Now it remains to be seen if a buycott by trans and their allies can make up the difference, which I imagine was the original intent of the campaign.
As for the original customers, once they try Coors Light or some other bargain-basement light beer, they'll probably find there's no real difference. Their beer habits may stay changed long after they've forgotten all about the Mulvaney promotion.

It's weird to me that people care so much about this person making a deal with Bud Light. Most of the rednecks complaining about it wouldn't be caught dead drinking light beer - that's for "fags, women, and pussies."
I find the Nike situation far more concerning. If you want a trans person to pimp sports bras, at least get one with implants. Dylan doesn't need a sports bra.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 22, 2023 11:12 PM |
R57, I agree. Trans people certainly drink beer, but a skinny man doesn't wear a sports bra.
The reason there's no big boycott is because Nike's core customer base is upscale urbanites who are willing to spend big bucks for branded workout equipment. Most of them either love transgender folx or they're afraid they'll look like "Nazis" if they object to Dylan, so they are cowed into cheering the "inclusivity" of the Mulvaney promotion. For Nike, this is one more in a long string of "socially conscious" ads. It's just an incremental move.
For Bud Light, it was a whiplash 180-degree turn in their brand personality. Way too fast, way too much, way too soon for their downscale, working-class male consumers.
There could be a market for a trans-focused beer. Trans brewers, trans branding and all. A microbrewery could do really well with it, I think. But a huge mass market product cannot survive by appealing to a small niche. That's the definition of "mass market."

R58, that’s a great breakdown. I think this will be a case study in marketing textbooks for decades to come! It will be a cautionary tale about what can happen when an org tries to change their brand personality too quickly, particularly in a b2c business.
So what’s the lesson? I think (from personal experience) that working for a brand that you don’t actually believe in is a form of cognitive dissonance, and your *true* feelings can come out sideways, as-in this marketing executive’s passive aggressive treatment of Bud drinkers. She fucking hates them!! Don’t you think that could cause a problem in her performance? Of course it would. Maybe their corporate culture is just so very stale that they are weak in their leadership development and recruiting talented, innovative thinkers who embrace a new vision for the brand that everyone shares as a team up to the top? I cannot believe this woman had that much power and that there wasn’t anyone who really had their eyes on her and what she was doing! A marketing campaign should be approved at the highest levels at this time because our culture is in so much turmoil….just my two cents from mistakes I’ve actually made.

The problem is that this wasn’t a real campaign… Dylan was just gifted some swag as a one off. Joe Rogan actually says he was surprised at the backlash because brands do this all time time, they give their product to a “goofy” character to shill for a few seconds of cheap advertising
This turned into an issue because it went viral because Dylan chose to shill the brand while dressed as a fucking crazy stereotype. This would be the equivalent of sending your beer to a black blogger who decided to endorse the brand while dressed up as Aunt Jemima.

I’m guessing these two had no idea about Dylan and that one of their enterprising underlings who does community managing/influencer marketing did this. Which is, to an executive management team and Board, a fireable offense. But Alissa set the tone with her words on inclusivity and a corporate mandate to hit DEI metrics. Not realizing a potential Dylan out there with a personality disorder would exaggerate a minor gesture of influencer appreciation into pretending to be a brand ambassador. Sometimes micromanaging is essential, lest the crazies go rogue.

And I don't believe for a moment that, in a megacorp like AB InBev, brand managers are off on their own doing whatever strikes their fancy without running it by senior management.
They knew what they were doing and did it on purpose. They wanted to quickly shed their redneck customers and they did so.
Now they are hoping that Gen Z'ers will start chugging their swill. Good luck with that. They aren't drinking much beer at all, from what I can see. They're vaping weed and drinking White Claw. Beer is so Millennial. That's what Mom and Dad drink, ew.

They have a massive market. Sales may go down some from this fiasco, but the Bud Light market is pretty huge. I think it will survive this pretty easily. It's basic beer that people can get everywhere. It's much broader than "redneck" or "working class" beer.

Marketing team fucked up for acting disgusted that their piss water only appealed to frat boys and the masses when that's who they should have been targeting with new campaigns. Instead they tried to appeal to an audience that has better taste. That was their mistake and one of the reasons why heads are rolling.

If AB/Inbev were to offer Kid Rock $1 million to sponsor his tour (even though they know damn good and well he'd be playing to mostly empty venues), that whore would suck that money up faster than a top of the line Hoover.
Hell, he'd probably do it for 10K.
And thanks to the incel marketing genius @R109 for providing such compelling insight into the inner workings of a major multinational corporation. When was the last time you were out of your mother's basement, R109?

R111 - “When was the last time you were out of your mother's basement, [R109]?”
We are asking the same question to our marketing VP. 🤷🏽♂️

My corporate family has been around in one form or another for 170+ years, R112.
And we'll still be around long after whiny, pissant has beens like you and Kid Rock and Travis Tritt have faded into oblivion.

[quote]What horseshit. And come the first heat wave of summer, sales will be back where they were before,
r96 has no idea what year over year means.

Is “Spuds McKenzie and the Clydesdales” some kind of band?

Regardless of how shit Kid Rock is, that kind of gross person was their main consumer base - insulting them was a massive mistake.

The [italic]Times[/italic] weighs in.
A pretty evenhanded article that points out that Bud Light's sudden change in brand personality has upset more than its redneck base -- it's also disappointed trans advocates because it appears that management is backing down instead of standing by Mulvaney.
“They’re in the center of the culture wars in a way that no company could possibly want to be.”

Bud will try to spend their way out of this mess.

Are they sure it was the tranny that pissed off customers or just the scary ugly-ass cans?

R81. Did you see Monsieur Hailey’s pics from the Tiffany & Co event?
She brought the heat. Man-face, man-hands (she could seriously palm a basketball), and size 13 feet. I think you could grow chest hair just standing by her.

My honest opinion is very few if any gives a damn about the tranny personally. For years now megacorporations have been pushing woke bullshit down the throat of their customers.
There had to be pushback eventually. It's just that this happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back.

It just doesn’t make sense. Since when has trans ever been associated with beer particularly bud light. Where is the synergy. This is the most inane random celeb endorsement ever. Is Dylaney even a celeb yet? And Dylaney grew up loaded. There is no doubt in my mind her powerful father pulled some strings to land her the gig. She is just not that popular yet. This whole this is just weird. Does Dylaney even have followers outside the target demo?

The problem with this schmozzle is that it is Bud Light. If AB has stuck this fraud’s face onto one of the craft beers in their stable no one would have batted an eyelid.

" Is it a beer? Is it an ale? It's not really sure what it is. It looks like beer, but claims to be ale."

Oops poor OP. More red tags for the anti-trans trolls please webmistress! Nice work!
