George Goodman Obituary, Death – In the serene town of Okeechobee, Florida, the community mourns the passing of George Goodman, an esteemed resident and devout servant of the Lord. On December 8, 2023, at the age of 85, George peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering faith.
Born on October 22, 1938, to Foy and Gertha Goodman, George was a true son of Okeechobee. Throughout his lifetime, he found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of riding down to the lake and fishing. His commitment to his country was evident in his service in the United States Navy. A man of deep faith, George dedicated 41 years of his life to the New Testament Baptist Church of Okeechobee, where he found spiritual fulfillment and community.
In 2013, George retired from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office after years of dedicated service. His retirement marked not only the conclusion of a professional chapter but also the beginning of a new phase of life, one where he continued to impact the lives of those around him.
George is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucy, with whom he shared 54 years of love and companionship. Also preceding him were his parents, Foy and Gertha Goodman, his brother Marvin, and sisters Louise, Hilda, Sara, and Myrtle. He also mourned the loss of his grandson, Mitchell G. Hancock, Jr., and great-grandson, Wallace Lamb V.
He is survived by his loving son, George Goodman, Jr. (Judy), and devoted daughters Nancy Casselman (Don), Tammy Sandlin (Phillip), Gwen Lamb (Keith), and Monica Gelormino (Jesse). George’s legacy extends to his 15 grandchildren and an impressive 30 great-grandchildren, a testament to the love and warmth that radiated from his family.
Visitation to celebrate George’s life will be held on Monday, December 11, 2023, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Buxton & Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Evergreen Cemetery.
