Freemasonry is like politics in that it is almost all local. There is no overarching leadership of masonic groups, which in the USA are charity-minded fraternal societies with no involvement in politics or religion or business. There is also a code of conduct for members, where conviction of a felony is typically is an automatic expulsion. Some state grand lodges have now mandated criminal background checks prior to consideration of petition for membership, that is how seriously this is taken.

R32 I belong to both the York and the Scottish Rites. I have received all the degrees of the York Rite and I have presided over the Lodge, Chapter, Council and Commandery. I have been a presiding officer in the Scottish Rite and I received the 33rd degree, which is simply an honorary degree. It does not entitle you to anything special other than being so honored by the national organization.

R33 there is no national gathering for members of the 33rd degree to socialize other than the supreme council sessions the most of which is a business meeting open to all members. The part of the supreme council sessions reserved for the 33rd members is the actual conferral of the 33rd degree which is a stage play, one that many have slept through, myself included. The sessions are filmed and the film crew are not even members of the Scottish Rite. There is nothing secret or even interesting to non-members in all of this.

I was in DeMolay, and I found the people trashy and the rituals bizarre and disgusting.
