How do I Turn Tamper Protection on or off in Windows 10?

1. Turn Tamper Protection on or off using the Windows Security UI

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Go to Updates & Security
  4. Select Windows Security
  5. Switch to Virus and Threat protection 
  6. Select Manage Settings
  7. Scroll a bit to find Tamper Protection
  8. Toggle between On or Off, depending on what you need

2. Turn Tamper Protection on or off by changing registries

  1. Click Win + R
  2. Type in regedit.exe
    • This will open the Registry Editor
  3. Navigate to this location:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderFeatures
  4. Double click on DWORD TamperProtection to edit the value
  5. Set it to 0 to disable Tamper Protection
  6. Set it to 5 to enable Tamper Protection

3. Turn Tamper Protection on or off using Intune

  1. Go to the Microsoft 365 Device Management portal
  2. Sign in with your work or school account
  3. Select Device configuration
  4. Go to Profiles
  5. Create a profile that includes the following settings:
    • Platform:
      • Windows 10 and later
    • ProfileType:
      • Endpoint protection
  6. Go to Settings
  7. Select Windows Defender Security Center
  8. Click on Tamper Protection
  9. Configure it on or off
  10. Assign the profile to one or more groups

By following any of the following 3 methods, you will be able to toggle Tamper Protection on or off as you see fit. However, keep note that due to the nature of Tamper Protection and what it does, it is recommended that you keep it enabled at all times.
