I thought they butched him up when they got rid of the ponytail. When he talks though, a purse factory falls out. Great skater, but can't do a quad so he needs to coach, and hopefully help the jumping beans find a balance.

He could trans and give that Finnish sensation a run for her money.

He really is a beautiful artistic skater. He reminds me of Paul Wylie. Other skaters had more technically difficult programs, but Wylie's artistry was the best of his day. He usually didn't get the gold and he usually made some kind of mistake on a jump or two, but when some of the favorites fell in the short program at the 1992 Winter Olympics, he walked away with a silver medal. I felt his long program was underscored compared to Viktor Petrenko's, which took gold. Petrenko was always lauded as a great artistic skater, but I think Wylie was much better.

Brown is in even more of a deficit with all the quad kings when he has no quads. But his program component scores, the artistic mark under the current code of points, are usually pretty high. I think they could be higher. But even without quads and only triples, like Wylie Brown often makes an error or two on some of his jumps, especially in the long program. That's usually never enough to get in the medals in international competitions. He was definitely the second best skater at this year's US Championships, so a well deserved silver there.

All sorts of conflicting emotions after watching that. Arousal, emotional vulnerability, admiration, awe.

And yet, wrath for using a Josh Groban song and making me think of my grandmother the entire time.

I feel like the video at R9 is a whole argument for changing the point calculations for jumps. The small muscle control required for the level of artistry he has should be weighted with other athletic aspects.

I agree, R10, and the point system used to do that better until the Russians whined their asses off when Evan Lysacek beat jumpbot Evgeni Plushenko without a quad. Lysacek outskated Plushenko when you looked at all aspects of their programs. Plushenko had practically no choreography and made mistakes on some of his jumps. Lysacek was clean and had actual choreography in his program from start to finish. Lysacek was the more complete skater. But of course the Russians were furious and claimed a quadless gold medal was a step back for skating. The Russians, as always, got their way and the quad was more heavily weighted moving forward, even a quad with a fall.

That is what led to the quad kings like Hanyu, Shoma Uno, Nathan Chen, Ilia Malinin, etc. Ironically, the Russian men haven't really produced any gold medal contender quad kings since the Yagudin/Plushenko eras.
