Sandra Bullock is the deciding factor here. Judge Dredd wins.

Holy shit. Can't agree with you on this one, dude. Dredd was horrible, horrible stuff. Demolition Man's no classic, but it's fun. Snipes makes for a great villain and I get a kick out of the setting.

Yeah, I know Dredd doesn't earn favour even among die hard 90's action fans, but there's something endearing about the silliness of it all. It's not funny because of its badness, but I think it has a sort of pitiable charm to it. No doubt this is driven by nostalgia. There's the suits and the voice operated guns and the bikes that never start. And Diane Lane. Don't ask, bro.

I don't have to ask. I've got an insane crush on Diane Lane. INSANE. And I can understand nostalgia. But nostalgia doesn't even factor into the equation for me. I knew it was crap when I was a kid. I got a kick out of all things "future" when I was a youngster, but even that couldn't save JD for Mini-Me.

Do you not find that films you hated as a kid can bring you a positive feeling of nostalgia as an adult (or man-child in my case)? I've caught a lot of (Asian) films that I hated as a kid over the past year and I can strongly associate them with good times in the 90's. For me it works like this: Hated film as kid > refused to watch it for fifteen years > watch film now > can only associate it with a specific time (because there were no views in between the two ages). Like catching a scent of ammonia or some shit and remembering primary school. Ammonia ain't pleasing, but the memory makes you feel good. Or am I the only one that is that stuck in the past? (I liked Dredd as a kid, so this chain doesn't exactly apply, but still nostalgia.)

No, you're not the only one. My favorite show, to this very day, is still The Adventures of Pete & Pete. I don't know if that ever aired in the UK, but not only does it make me feel nostalgic, it IS nostalgia. I've got one foot in the present and one stuck in the mud somewhere in the 90's. Believe me, you're not the only one. And every once in a while, I'll watch a shitty movie from my youth and it'll bring the memories back. It's always a good feeling, but I've never been able to get past the truth that movie itself is shit. So yeah, I might associate something like Judge Dredd with good times, but I'll treasure the memories, not the shit movie. Now, if it's a shit movie that I happened to like as a kid, then it's a different story.

Fair enough. I've never heard of The Adventures of Pete and Pete but apparently it did air over here. I used to watch a bunch of Nickelodeon's shows, but this really doesn't ring a bell. I just stumbled across The 90s Are All That on Wikipedia and now I'm travelling link to link seeing titles that I was beginning to forget about. Rocko's Modern Life? Blossom? Clarissa Explains it All? Doug? ReBoot? Dinosaurs? Johnny fucking Bravo? Anamaniacs? Hellloooooooo Nurse!!! Even The Jackie Chan Adventures. The other day someone mentioned that Eminem turned 40. Man, we had a superstar teacher that played The Eminem Show end to end on a coach ride (there AND back) during some summer field trip to an amusement park. Excepting the guys involved in this "Em is old" conversation, I haven't seen most of those cats in years, but I bet they all remember trying to chant the words "...just to get to see an MC who breathes so freely ease over these and be so breezy. Jesus how can shit be so easy? How can one Chandra be so Levy? Turn on these beats MCs don't see me. Believe me BET and MTv are gonna grieve when we leave dawg for sheezy. Can't leave rap alone, the game needs me!" I don't know how many times we listened to that last verse of Business and none of us had any idea what the hell Em was saying with that Chandra Levy line. Damn what a memory (did the same thing with 'Lose Yourself' too). Followed, of course, by one of those weird group moments where you sit in silence thinking about how fucking old you all are. Have you seen 'Young Adult' with Charlize Theron? That film right there is one for people stuck in the past.

I don't understand how Judge Dredd is winning this battle. It's not even the best Dredd movie.

Demolition Man is like Judge Dredd's better written, better directed, intentionally funny brother. With that said...I do like me some Judge Dredd. Neither is great, both are pretty damn entertaining, but one is obviously the "good" movie.

Demolition Man can't decide if it's goofy comedy or vicious action film; in the end, it's neither. Judge Dredd has way too much Stallone sententiousness, but it wins here.

Agreed with MysticSpoon, Judge Dredd had worse writing.
