Born to loving parents, Marcus was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Janie Smiley and Cornelius Courtland, his maternal grandparents, Guadalupe Alcedo and Roberto Alcedo, and his aunt, Naomi Mills. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of family, friends, and those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Marcus embarked on his academic journey at O’Fallon Township High School, where he graduated in 2012. Eager to pursue higher education, he enrolled at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he began his studies towards a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. Known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his studies, Marcus quickly made a positive impression on his peers and professors.
In addition to his commitment to education, Marcus felt a profound sense of duty to his country. This commitment led him to enlist in the Illinois Air National Guard, a decision that showcased his patriotism and desire to serve something greater than himself. Marcus served in various roles, starting as a Repair and Reclamation Journeyman and a Maintenance Operations Controller Apprentice. His passion for aviation and his commitment to excellence propelled him to his final position as an Aircraft Inspection Journeyman.
Marcus Smiley was not only a dedicated serviceman but also a scholar. Despite the challenges of balancing military service and academic pursuits, he demonstrated unwavering perseverance. He recently achieved a significant milestone by completing his Bachelor’s degree, majoring in Economics and minoring in Business Administration. His academic accomplishments stand as a testament to his determination and intellect.
Friends and colleagues remember Marcus for his infectious smile, positive attitude, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Whether in the classroom or on duty, he approached every task with diligence and a sense of purpose.
