A Sailor (Japanese: ふなのり Sailor) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that debuted in the Generation I games. Originally they were often depicted as burly men in sailor suits flexing their muscles, though their actual physical shape varies between games. The sailor is one of two minor trainer classes, the other being Guitarist, whose design features a visible tattoo. The Generation I sprites have an anchor tattoo and the Pokémon XD model has “FeeL GooD” tattooed across the knuckles reminiscent of “Hold Fast” tattoos. In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, a sailor named Eldritch plays a minor part in the game's storyline.
They usually specialize in Water-type Pokémon, with the exception of using Raticate and the Machop evolution family.
In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Sailors battled outside of Gyms will award three Poké Balls along with prize money upon being defeated.

In Tentacool & Tentacruel, Ash and Misty's Pokémon rescued a Sailor.
In Mantine Overboard, a Sailor gave Ash and his friends information about the ferry they missed.
In Hoenn Alone!, a Sailor with the exact same design helped Ash battle Team Rocket. He was called a captain in the English dub.
In Island Time, a Sailor and a ship captain found Ash and his friends after they escaped Wailmer Island.
In Cilan and the Case of the Purrloin Witness!, a Sailor helped the Captain of the ship Ash and his friends were riding on investigate Mrs. Ripple's lost jewel. He did this by interrogating Mr. Shaw.
In A Glaring Rivalry!, a Sailor had a battle against Gladion and his Midnight Form Lycanroc, but they lost.
In Crowning the Chow Crusher!, a Sailor was among the competitors in the Pokémon Grand Eating Contest. Though he managed to get past the first round, his Swalot was unable to continue due to Team Rocket feeding it tampered cookies that filled up its stomach.

Red, Green & Blue arc
In Danger: High Voltorb, a group of Sailors are the S.S. Anne's guards. They are seen carrying boxes to the ship.
Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

Sailor Eldritch appears in this chapter, being one of the many sailors to work on the S.S. Aqua. In the Diamond & Pearl arc, he was revealed to have become a captain of the S.S. Sinnoh.
FireRed & LeafGreen arc
In Now You See Me..., a Sailor was seen in command of the Seagallop Ferry. He would be seen frequently during the arc, transporting the Kanto Pokédex holders from island to island.
Emerald arc
In Epilogue, multiple Sailors makes a cameo by appearing in the S.S. Sinnoh which is heading to the Battle Frontier.
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc
A Sailor was one of the people swarming the Mossdeep Space Center in Diancie Shines.
Diamond & Pearl arc
In Crafty Carnivine and Floatzel and Jetsam, Sailors are seen in the Pastoria Gym. In the latter chapter, Crasher Wake orders the Sailors to dive in the water of Pastoria Gym to save Platinum from drowning, but it turns out she left the water by herself without needing their help.
Multiple Sailors aboard the S.S. Sinnoh were shown to be taken out by a wild Gliscor in Grumpy Gliscor. In Vexing Vespiquen & Unmanageable Mothim II, those same Sailors witnessed the hatching of the Pokémon Egg found on Iron Island alongside Eldritch.
Platinum arc
A Sailor briefly appeared in the Battle Frontier in Clobbering Claydol as Looker was searching for Platinum.
