The Southern W.A.S.P.

We haven’t had a good WASP thread in a while, so I wondering about DL’s take on the southern version of the yankee WASP.

There are key and distinct differences between the two.

You don’t see a lot of crossover. Yankee wasps and southern wasps are like oil and water.

I think one of the biggest differences is in the “exclusivity” of each set. Southern wasps are more loosely defined and therefore more loosely defined.

In the north, there are levels to waspdom. Rungs, if you will.

In the south they are all mushed together.

Southern wasps are more showey than their northern cousins.

They tend to join fraternities

This photo highlights another major difference between the two. In fact, it might just be the defining difference between the two.

My partner is one, attended Hampden-Sydney. He’s been up north for decades but was deep in that scene way back when.

A.k.a. the kind of guys most DLers think about when they jerk off.

R9 most wasps are ugly. 99% are pasty, doughy and bland. The centuries of inbreeding have not been kind.

You literally have to sift through 100O wasps to find one legitimate stud.

God damn, only one of those guys (blondie on the left) is cute. Are southern wasps generally homely? I imagine those elite southern fraternities would have better looking guys than that. I also think of ruddy cheeked, natural athleticism when I think of wasps from both directions (sailing, tennis, equestrianism).

Take a look at any frat group photo. There’s always 1 one guy and 9 dogs hanging around him for the scraps.

Yankee WASPs are boring in bed. Southern WASPs are absolute pig fucks who will shock and excite you with their depravity.

Holy shit. I was in Dallas at a wedding for my cousin a few years back (bride and groom both attorneys), and at the groom's dinner, nearly every male friend of my cousin was wearing a navy blazer and khakis, including my cousin, just like in the OP's pic. They were all smoking cigars and drinking scotch on the rocks. It was bizarre, and kind of creepy in a male Stepford-ish kind of way. I kept wondering, "Do they have to dress like this, or is it a choice?"

They look like they’re about to be kneed in the groin.

Hierarchy of Southern wasps, by denomination:

1. Episcopalians

2. Presbyterians

3. Methodists

4. The rest of the protestants

More butch and loud than Yankees wasps, fatter from drinking, but sometimes more muscular- HUUUGE chip on their shoulder about the South being as good as the North. (It ain't.)

The Northerners hold education in higher regard, that’s for sure.

Southern WASPs: Less cosmopolitan (they don't travel overseas w/o a package tour), more bigoted, more Catholic and Jewish stereotypes. Showy yet conservative tastes, more superficial. Their sense of privilege is more important to them. They also are more socially and economically threatened by evangelicals and fundies, esp. the Baptists who are semi-respectable. Racism and religious prejudice used to be more uniting among Protestants.

Is frottage more common among young northern WASP men?

Size meat comparisons please? Some of the northern bluebloods are horsehung. Biddles, Whitneys, and those Dutch the Stuyvesants, Van Rensselaers - yum.

The gentleman in OP’s photo in front and to the left of the one in the far back looks like he could, as my grandmother would say, eat corn on the cob through a picket fence.

They are all about their outfits, primarily clad in Vineyard Vines and Southern Tide, with J Crew to fill in the gaps. The love "brown water" ie Bourbon, Whiskey, Scotch and they love hunting and fishing, preferably on private lands in a weekend "house party" arrangement. Social events are crucial.

Southern Wasps are just a notch above white trash with better taste in furniture.

Except for Episcopalians, they all started as fundies and have branches that have stayed that way. The Methodists came after the Presbyterians, so they were low rent while the Presbyterians were becoming identified with humorless capitalists.

The Episcopalians ran a big tent like the Catholics (just don't remind them), so they had low and high church to accommodate the riffraff and the fancy.

Keep in mind that Protestants have no tradition of self-referential humor, instead they make fun of Catholics and other Protestant denominations. It reflects their wanting to retain their sense of privilege, no matter ludicrous.

R34, Strictly speaking, yes, the UK has millions of white Anglo Saxon Protestants. WASP however means much more than what the acronym denotes in its literal sense. The term originated in the US and is specific to American society. It refers to what used to be our élite ruling class, which is today only a shadow of its former self.

I was surprised that Southern WASPs (and there were a decent amount of them at Princeton) even ones my age, considered Catholics to be sort of exotic. They were not prejudiced as much as they definitely considered Catholics to be Others, more in the same boat with Jews.

Southern WASPs owned this, and shamefully still want it back.

The WASP class is on the descent in both the North and the South. In the North, they are typically pasty, boring and still whining about how much money their family lost in the Great Depression. They also complain about the difficulty of getting into the Ivy League schools today despite the fact that the family name is on the School of Business building. They typically still think they matter.

In the South, the boys often start out better looking but as they age they tend to get fat. They tend to be consumed with football and hunting and uninformed about anything else. They also can completely block out the memory that you blew them regularly in college when their girlfriend wouldn't. They typically don't care if they matter to not as long as they still have some timber to cut for money as needed.

I pretty much only date WASPs. They don't have the family enmeshment issues that others do. I can't deal with anyone who's overly involved with their family.

R58, as I understand it, in a very prejudiced way: anglicans/Episcopalians are English, colonial. Presbyterians are Scottish/Scots Irish colonial. (Quakers are mid Atlantic colonial, old puritans northern colonial bats hit lol)

Methodists/Baptists are American. And a bit trashier- it's from here, as opposed to the other religions originating in the UK.

I'm probably wrong, but it's how the hierarchy was somewhat defined to me via England/Scotland/Ireland and the American colonists.

When I think of Southern WASPs, I immediately think of Southern Charm and those characters in Charleston.

Blue sport coats, pastel colored pants, orange tie. I don't hate the look - but behind it are some of the biggest racist, homophobic, faux-religious, elitist bigots you'll ever meet.

Northern WASPs are much more liberal, non-vocal about politics and have a more live-and-let-live approach.

There were Baptists in England and people who came here converted---fundamentalist but without snakes or other obvious weirdness. There used to be more ideological variation among the Southerners, but the church hierarchies have thrown out the most liberal churches.

Methodism is an American thing, although they also absorbed some of the German evangelical churches loosely related to the Mennonites and Amish. You're missing the Congregationalists (UCC) which were rooted in the New England---they've gone from witch hunting to being the most liberal "mainline" denomination. Presbyterianism absorbed some of the Dutch Reformed and other Calvinist churches, which is part of how they became middle class and humorless..

Went to school with quite a few of them and was just mentioning to a friend the other day about how so many guys in our class let themselves go by 25. So many are fat from beer and have leathery skin due to too much sun exposure. One of the unexpected joys of getting older is seeing how many of the people who were cute or pretty in high school hit a wall by 30 and the ones who weren't much of anything back in high school end up aging much better and take better care of themselves.

In the Northeast, The Congregational Church is also "acceptable."

Many are, technically, but there’s a hierarchy. Baptists and Evangelicals are considered a bit trashy compared by Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and (to a lesser extent) Methodists. Actually, I think Baptists are Evangelicals now, but they didn’t used to be.

Baptists are literalists and beleive in personal salvation. They see themselves as apart from the Evangelicals.

Northern WASPs are obsessed with Ivy Leagues. Southern WASPs are happy with pretty surroundings like Suwannee or bullshit white-bread diploma mills like Vanderbilt.

Northern WASPs have books everywhere. Southern WASPs have a study, which is where the men do most of their drinking.

Northern WASPs tend to be causes-oriented. Southern WASPs may tithe to the poor through their church, but it ends there.

Northern WASPs are politicians. Southern WASPs are political.

Northern WASPs collect art or antiquities. Southern WASPs have Lovely Things.

Northern WASPs either don't have or pretend not to have issues with Jews and Black people (in part because there's no getting away from them); the ones whose ancestors were abolitionists don't mind letting you know. Southern WASPs do not mix at their own social level.
