Dody, as he was affectionately known, was a revered Force Reconnaissance Officer whose career spanned multiple units, leaving an indelible mark on those who served alongside him. Dody’s life was an exemplification of resilience, determination, and an unwavering warrior spirit. He faced a relentless battle against Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) for over a decade, and in recent weeks, he confronted the progression of his cancer into Acute Myeloid Leukemia. His unwavering courage defied a decade of devastating prognoses and hospitalizations, giving his family precious additional time with him.
Born on April 2, 1955, in Lexington, North Carolina, Dody’s early years were marked by a love for sports, mischief, and a strong bond with his best friends, Guy and David. His affection for his older sister, Cheryl Koontz Sueur, and devotion to his beloved mother, who passed away when he was just 21, remained constants in his life. Dody’s academic prowess was evident as he graduated at the top of his high school class, and he proceeded to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, on a Naval ROTC Scholarship. He took his studies seriously, in honor of a promise made to his mother before leaving for college.
His keen intellect and gift for learning led him to tackle challenging courses such as calculus, driven purely by his sense of curiosity. The library, a place he frequented, became synonymous with his dedication to academics and, truth be told, with an off-campus bar of the same name. In 1977, after his graduation, Dody was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps. This marked the beginning of a stellar military career during which he served as an Infantry and Reconnaissance Officer, embodying the very essence of a “Marine’s Marine.” Dody’s dedication to the Marine Corps and his country was unwavering, a testament to his sense of duty and honor.
However, Dody’s life wasn’t only about military service; it also encompassed deep and enduring love. On November 1, 1985, fate led Dody to a blind date with Karen Widener. While the initial date didn’t go as planned, they were committed to attending the Marine Corps Birthday Ball together, and the rest, as they say, is history. They were married just over a year later, on December 13, 1986, and embarked on a journey that spanned nearly 37 wonderful years. Their love story was nothing short of legendary, an epic tale of love and companionship that inspired all who were fortunate enough to witness it.
Dody cherished his role as a father to his three children, Sage, Ehren, and Ryan. He shared a unique and profound connection with his niece, Tammy, and his nephew, Jamie, who had preceded him in death. Some of their fondest memories were of their father singing lullabies, albeit lullabies that were military cadences. Dody’s children grew up with the sound of their father’s voice leading them in songs about C-130s rolling down the strip and running through the jungle with an M16. They learned early on to keep their “head on a swivel” and to “stay frosty.” To Dody, his family was his greatest accomplishment in life, a testament to his deep love and dedication.
