He was there to present the dull-ass award for Best Art Direction (in a year of great period pieces), and instead of reading the name and then disappearing like a good little also-ran, he launches into this bullshit rant about China and Tibet. It really kills the mood, and I wonder how the award recipients felt about sharing the stage with that awkwardness.

You wish they could've shown audience reaction shots: Anjelica Huston rolling her eyes, Jack Palance digging for his pistol, Susan Sarandon holding up her fist in solidarity, etc.

Gere was reportedly banned from future Oscars telecasts after this, and for good reason. Who the hell cares what celebrities think about foreign affairs?

Does anyone remember this night? It was the year of Unforgiven, Scent of a Woman, and Marisa Tomei's accidental Oscar.

I remember the 65th Academy Awards were promoted as a celebration of women or some such thing.

All year, women had been complaining about how men get the best parts and that the Best Actor and Supporting Actor categories received more attention than their female counterparts.

The 1992 Best Actress nominees were slim pickings:

- Emma Thompson, HOWARDS END **winner**

- Catherine Deneuve, INDOCHINE

- Mary McDonnell, PASSION FISH

- Michelle Pfeiffer, LOVE FIELD

- Susan Sarandon, LORENZO'S OIL

These were the men:

- Al Pacino, SCENT OF A WOMAN

- Clint Eastwood, UNFORGIVEN

- Stephen Rea, THE CRYING GAME

- Denzel Washington, MALCOLM X

R3 R4 And you can't forget Marisa Tomei. Any truth to the assumption that old Jack Palance read the wrong name, and it was supposed to be Miranda Richardson?
