Did anyone see it?
Looks like an overheated mishmash of Fried Green Tomatoes and the Notebook

It looks like a movie made specifically for fraus.

R1, it's produced by Reese Witherspoon so...yes

I’m in the minority of readers in that I didn’t love the book. Kind of hokey and far fetched. So not surprised the movie isn’t great.

I read a synopsis of the novel. It sounds very familiar, like something I've seen or heard before, especially the ending. It has the feeling of something that's been done before, and probably better.

Seems like frau-bait, but I'm more intrigued by it after learning that the author is wanted for questioning in an old murder investigation.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 17, 2022 1:03 AM |
Yeah, she and her husband were accused of being part of a murder in Africa
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 17, 2022 2:09 AM |
They murdered an alleged poacher. They went on a white savior mission to Africa to save the animals.

Yes, I would never lie, R7!!

The tide is turning FAST! Everyone involved in this film from Reese Whitherspoon to Taylor Swift now are facing backlash, but they seem completely unaware of Delia Owen's past of "murdering" hunters and poachers.

Frau bait, but a couple of VERY hot guys in it.

Word of mouth should be good, studio is hoping it’s going to play for a while
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 19, 2022 6:37 AM |
R14 deadly hung, apparently!

The book was terrible. Really, really awful. And I’m no literary snob. I think WW Z is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Crawdads was idiocy.

The movie was okay but really should have been a Netflix or Hulu original. The acting was pretty uneven and the story seemed full of holes (I didn't read the book so maybe things are fleshed out better there.) The lead from Beach Rats plays a key character but he doesn't get naked. The lead actress reminded me of Cynthia Gibb but I didn't figure that out until just now so the entire movie I was trying to think who she looked like. Not terrible but don't go out of your way.

[quote] but he doesn't get naked.
R15 interesting, was he supposed to?
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 27, 2022 12:07 PM |
^^There were several opportunities for him to and since he wasn’t shy about showing skin in Beach Rats it was disappointing he didn’t

The buzz is because it was an NYT best seller for a record or near-record length of time and it has sold over 12 million copies.
It's also a novelty because this is the author's debut at am advanced age, over 60.
It's "book club fiction," which is to say it's the genre Reese Witherspoon options and HBO produces and Nicole Kidman stars in (if it's good—see 'Big Little Lies' by Liane Moriarty) or Hulu produces (if it's bad—see 'Nine Perfect Strangers' by Liane Moriarty).

guess another reason to skip it, there was no male nudity!
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 27, 2022 12:32 PM |
I didn’t like the book either R4. I felt like the author was trying to write a Barbara Kingsolver novel.

I love that she's getting cancelled over killing a disgusting poacher. Lefties are all against poachers, but the black poachers should be taken out by black people, otherwise intersectionality and colonialism come into play and they have to side with the poacher.
I think extrajudicial killings of poachers should be completely normalised, black or white or purple. You should be able to go on a vacation in Africa and brag about bagging a couple of them, and get applauded for it.

Hello, Racism. SO surprised to see you here at the DL.

Worst movie title in ages.

That Place Where the Birds Chirp and Banjos Go Plink Plunk Pluck by Karen Jones Smith

I assumed it was about Cajun country. Bad title.

12 million copies sold, I imagine those readers may disagree with you
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 27, 2022 3:43 PM |
R28, chickleture I'm sure.
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 27, 2022 3:50 PM |
It wasn't good. They really gave it a Nicholas Sparks-style washing. The book was much grittier.
Love Daisy Edgar-Jones in Normal People. She was fine in this... but just fine. The 2 male leads are horrible actors.

Stupid name for a book or story, the only time i have heard crawdads scream is when they are going in the boiling pot for mah dinner.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 27, 2022 4:44 PM |
They sing, not scream, but I’m sure you knew that
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 28, 2022 3:21 AM |
Where the Crawdads Sing sounds like the title of a fake play in a Christopher Guest movie
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 28, 2022 6:04 AM |
I love how people kind of contradict themselves. They hated the poachers killing animals (quite rightly) but interpreted that as okay to kill people (wrongly). They are sides of the same coin. Scum, both of them.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 28, 2022 6:27 AM |
The description of the book sounds awful. She's the most beautiful and smart girl ever! Who raised herself alone in a swamp! But the townspeople all hate her for no good reason!
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 28, 2022 7:25 AM |
R31 are the crawdads still screaming Clarice?
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | July 28, 2022 7:26 AM |
I'd watch it if the main character gets fucked by her hot uncle.
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 28, 2022 7:42 AM |
Haven’t seen it yet but the lead actress is going to be huge. I can tell
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 28, 2022 8:08 AM |
Where The Crawdads Sing could have been am excellent piece of overheated Southern coming-of-age trash had Reese Witherspoon not produced it on the cheap with an inexperienced director and a inexpensive cast. With the exceptions of the father, the lawyer and the gas station couple, the actors were entirely miscast.
Daisy Edgar-Jones plays a dirty stinky swamp rat but struts around with the looks and confidence of an Anthropologie model.
