I never see them advertised and no one I know seems to have one.

Apparently not.

They weighed a ton, which is why they were often banned.

Have you every known anyone who had a heart-shaped tub or bed outside of a brothel? Those were so very tacky.

We keep a retro apartment Uptown in New Orleans and have a waterbed in one of the bedrooms there. It's on the second floor and even though we're there only twice a year we've never had any problem. No, the water doesn't get moldy, even in the Big Easy. We do have the landlady check the place every week, though - mail and such, so we'd know. Friends stay there, too, and they usually use the "waterbed bedroom."
They take a while to get used to, both in "embarking" and "disembarking" and in knowing how to roll over and move. It's just a queen.

A friend had one when we were kids. I hated it. I typically chose to sleep on the floor (when we weren't fooling around).

And so are you!

I don’t know anyone that has one now. I had one for a few years back in the mid 90s. It was a full flow water bed which meant the water moved around freely. The things I enjoyed it about it was that you could control the temperature of the water. It helped when you had sore muscles or when it was really cold in the winter. I loved it! The only time I did not like it was when I was drunk and had the bed spins. Not good times then.

They've been out of style since at least the early 90s. They were mostly for the cool factor, though some people undoubtedly felt better sleeping on a non traditional mattress.

Waterbeds make me think of someone like The Ladies Man.
"And why do you have a waterbed when you live on a boat?"
"Oh, it's because there's more motion in the ocean."

I have one. It's in my bedroom along side my avocado green shag rug and leopard print couch. Jealous bitches?
